Dentists Performing Botox Injections

By Erin O'breen

Whether wishing to make an improvement in appearance for medical reasons, or because of a personal issue, specially trained medical staff are available to deliver Botox injections for these purposes. Performing Botox injections should be done by a doctor in most cases, as the standards that are required to deliver these injections are very strictly enforced. Other qualified medical staff are also able to deliver the injections as well, if a certified doctor is present, a nurse can administer the treatment, for example.

Recently, there has been some discussion as to whether dentists can prescribe and administer botox injections. Many considerations are made while determining the qualifications, and part of that are the laws of the state where it is administered.

Let's take a look at this a bit further.

What concerns are involved?

The proper training must be taken, as dentists who deliver botox are bound by the same guidelines as other medical personnel. For these treatments to be administered, it takes someone who knows precisely how the body works, who has had significant medical training, it's not a difficult procedure, but it takes professional skill. With injections such as these, there are sometimes side effects, and they can only be properly dealt with by a highly trained expert.

Dentists are generally approved to inject and prescribe botox after they have completed the training for this procedure.

Botox administration by Dentists

The prescription and administration of botox treatments are allowed by dentists in the majority of the United States. However, the indications for injecting botox are different to regular cosmetic injections. To illustrate this, botox can be injected for the treatment of myofascial conditions and is covered by a dental plan as allowed by the Dental Board of California. A dentist can not legally administer botox treatments for conditions that are of the cosmetic variety. Administering it for this reason involves the Facial Cosmetic Surgery Permit to approve of the procedure. Board approved courses are taught in some states like Georgia, they lay out the exact specifications of administering the toxin, and the different types available and of course rigorous review of the anatomy of the face.

Botox treatments for cosmetic reasons have lately been allowed by the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry, for those who have had the intensive training required for these injections.

Since states have their own separate rules on this subject, patients should do their own research into whether their dentist is permitted to administer these treatments. Treatments of botox for cosmetic reasons seem to becoming more accepted for cosmetic purposes by dentists lately.

The arguments in question

Some debate is happening presently for and against dentists being approved to cosmetically treat patients using botox injections. This subject has been argued lately with some stating on medical forums that dentists lack the necessary knowledge about facial anatomy, and that only plastic surgeons should perform it. The board in the state has some stipulations that agree with this assessment, and say only dentistry related botox treatments should be approved for dentists.

However, the dentists would argue otherwise, stating that their knowledge of facial and maxillofacial anatomy is good if not better than many physicians, thus making them the right people to administer botox. At this time, it looks like it will be years before this debate is finished.

Summary

The number of patients requesting botox treatments seems to be surpassing the ability of medical professionals to deliver them, due to rising demand. With ever changing policies, state boards are now approving dentists to treat patients who would like to have botox treatments performed.
